7 Signs your child might need a tutor
A question I hear from parents all of the time is how do I know if my child needs a tutor? As parents we make every effort to help and support our kids, but sometimes you also need help. I have compiled a list of seven signs your child might need a tutor.
Slipping Grades and Scores
If you are noticing your child is underperforming in their classes, this might be a sign they need some extra help.
They Are Having Trouble Getting Started
When we don’t like something we avoid it, like every time I tell my kids to clean their rooms, they have a million excuses as to why they are unable to complete the task. I know they are only trying to avoid a task they do not like to complete. The same can be said of your child and their school work. If your child is trying to avoid completing homework, it might not be a lack of motivation, it could be that they are frustrated or overwhelmed with the work. When you are overwhelmed and you don’t know where to start, sometimes it feels easier to not start.
Turning in Poorly Completed or Incomplete Assignments:
If you notice your child is turning in incomplete assignments or poorly completed assignments it might be a sign of a deeper issue. Being disorganized can indicate academic difficulties or it could be a sign of a learning disability or executive functioning disorder.
They Spend A Lot of Time Studying but it Doesn’t Translate to Grades
If you notice your child spends a lot of time completing homework and studying for tests and quizzes but that word does not translate to test scores it could be a sign they need extra help. Difficulty with testing is common, they understand the material while completing classwork and homework, but struggle with testing, a tutor can help with test-taking strategies.
Your Child Has Low Self-Esteem
If your child says that they are just “bad” at a subject that could be another sign they need extra help. A tutor can give one on one individualized attention and time. A tutor can help build up your child’s confidence. Usually difficulty with a subject is a result of underlying gaps in the subject matter and a tutor can help identify and fill in those gaps.
Your Child has Lost Interest in School
If your child has loved school in the past and is now avoiding it, it could be a sign they are having difficulty with the school work. When a child doesn’t understand what they are learning it can be easier for them to give up or avoid it altogether.
