Picture Books to Read in October

Here are some fun picture books to read during this spooky month. I love reading books that match the month, here you will find some halloween books, some pumpkin books and some books about fall, hopefully you will consider some of these books on your next library trip.

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves by: Lucille Colandro with illustrations by Jared Lee

This is a silly story about an old lady who swallows all kinds of fall things. There are several versions of this book for different seasons and holidays and they are so much fun to read.

Sophie’s Squash by: Pat Zietlow Miller and Anne Wilsdorf

This book is about Sophie and her squash. She doesn’t want to eat the squash, instead she names it and takes it everywhere with her. But what happens when her new friend starts to rot?

Strega Nonas Harvest by: Tomie DePaula

This is a book about the changing of the seasons and the hard work that comes with the harvest.

Otis and the Scarecrow by: Lauren Long

The Otis books are some of my favorites. In this book on the farm, Otis the tractor is introduced to a new friend the farmer brings home; a scarecrow to help keep the crows away.

Pumpkin Jack by: Will Hubbell

This book tells the story of what happens to pumpkins after we carve them. It is a story that tells of the cycle of life.

The Ugly Pumpkin by: Dave Horowitz

This is about a pumpkin who doesn’t quite fit in with the rest of the pumpkins. This is a great book to teach about self-image.

At the Old Haunted House by: Helen Ketteman and illustrated by: Nate Wragg

This is written as a poem and it is full of Halloween creatures. It follows three children as the travel through the haunted house and all of the things they encounter.

Creepy Carrots by: Aaron Reynolds with illustrations by: Peter Brown

This is about some carrots who try to scare a rabbit into staying away from the carrot patch.

I hope you found some new books to try this month. Let me know your favorite books to read in October!
