Tips to Prepare For Final Exams or Midterms

Many of our students will be taking first semester exams in the coming days. I have put together a list of tips to help those students prepare for those finals.

Tip #1:

Utilize Study Guides and Practice Tests: Many teachers will put together a study guide and give practice tests to help students prepare for exams. It is important to complete those assignments. The act of completing the work helps you to study, and teachers will put information on those study guides that they intend to put on the exam. Use those study guides and ask for help on the areas you are unsure of.

Tip #2:

Chunk the Material: Break the content into smaller more manageable chunks and review one topic at a time. Breaking material into smaller chunks makes studying for a large amount of information easier to manage.

Tip #3:

Spaced Practice: Study a little each day instead of cramming the night before. It helps to use a planner or calendar, write down what you plan to study each day and stick to that plan. Studying a little each day, and breaking the material into smaller chunks can make studying the material more manageable. Make sure you give yourself enough time to review the material.

Tip #4:

Turn Off Your Notifications: When you sit down to study each day, turn off the notifications on your phone. I am one to get easily distracted by my social media, text messages and email notifications. Turning off those notifications helps limit your distractions and helps you to focus on the material you need to study.

Tip #5:

Practice Self Care: Make sure you are eating well and taking breaks while studying. Eating healthy gives you energy and keeps your mind strong. Another aspect of self-care is to make sure you are getting enough sleep. You will be able to concentrate on your exams with a good night’s sleep and full stomach.

I hope these tips help you to prepare for your first semester exams. Do you have any tips you would add to this list?
